Continuing a 100 year Family Tradition

Gary Cornelis Van der Leek, owner of Vanderleek Roofing, established the company after receiving his roofing training on Vancouver Island in 1989. He’s proud to be a part of the long Van der Leek family tradition. The Van der Leek family first began building over 100 years ago with Great Grandfather Van der Leek in North Holland, a province of the Netherlands. Many of the homes that Great Grandfather helped to design and construct in the early 1900s are still standing in Haarlem, North Holland today.

Later, the Vanderleek reputation would spread as Gary’s grandfather left Holland for Cape Town, South Africa — a coastal city originally founded by the Dutch East India Company as a supply station for ships traveling to and from the Netherlands. Here, Grandfather Van der Leek produced quality built steel products and manufactured first generation Roller Form machines. The Van der Leek family founded Foldo Blinds, which still uses and manufactures retractable steel and aluminum awnings in South Africa under the careful management of Gary’s cousin, Robbie Van der Leek.

Gary’s dad, Kees Van der Leek, left Cape Town and immigrated to Canada. He first arrived in Calgary in 1967. Kees immediately put his skills and experience to work, contributing to projects like the Namao Canadian Forces air base where he fabricated and installed parapet cladding for the airport hangers. However, Kees’s true calling was in education. After completing his teaching certificate, he chose to teach at the trades school WP Wagner in Edmonton, Alberta where he passed on his skills in the field of sheet metal. After retiring, Kees moved out to Vancouver Island, but he still enjoys consulting with Vanderleek Roofing and has fun building musical instruments in his spare time.

Today, Gary strives to build on the key factors of reliability, quality of workmanship, and service to the client that his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather valued and taught with both their words and actions. Gary has spent the last three decades building a reputation for trust, quality, and experience. Like Kees before him, Gary believes in the power of education and is proud to continue the long Van der Leek tradition of passing knowledge and training on to the upcoming generation. Christopher Ballegeer (Certified Red Seal Roofer) is part of that upcoming generation. Christopher was trained by Gary, and Vanderleek Roofing greatly benefits from the enthusiasm and skills of this lifelong resident of Vancouver Island.
